D., associate professor of surgery and epidemiology, and co-director of the Department of Cardiology and Stroke at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The researchers reported that a recent study of men with a history of heart disease in the United States showed that “people who took Prilosec had a significantly lower risk of stroke than people who took Nexium 24HR,” they wrote in the study. They also reported that Prilosec and Nexium 24HR were the only two medications for whom “an increased risk of having a stroke or heart attack” was reported. “We conclude that the findings of this study do not support that conclusion,” said Cohen.
Cohen’s team of researchers analyzed data from the study and found that men who took Prilosec were more likely to be diagnosed with a heart attack and stroke than those who took Nexium 24HR.
They also found that men who took Prilosec were “more likely to have a stroke,” and “more likely to have a heart attack and a stroke.”
The researchers said they are “committed to continue our work to identify risk factors associated with heart disease,” but they added that they would like to see more data to help explain why men who are taking Prilosec may have a higher risk of having a heart attack. “Given the evidence that Prilosec and Nexium 24HR both work by increasing the amount of acid in the blood, these findings are important to consider in the future,” said Cohen.
The researchers are currently conducting a phase 2 study of men with a history of heart disease who took Prilosec and Nexium 24HR to determine the role of acid in the heart and to determine whether the risk of heart attack is related to the drug’s action in the heart.
